Biosolids are the nutrient-rich organic materials removed from treated wastewater. These highly processed solids are treated to reduce the volume and volatility due to methance gas. San Francisco produces over 80,000 tons of biosolids a year that are transported to landfills in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano counties and two land application sites in Solano and Sonoma counties. Public perceptions about the land application of biosolids and related concerns about potential health and safety impacts will limit San Francisco’s disposal options in the near future. Some communities, in fact, have proposed resolutions to ban the import of biosolids from other areas. The master plan will look at new locations and methods for biosolids disposal.
