Much of the City’s sewer pipes and two of our treatment facilities are old and need repair. In fact, we have one of the oldest collection systems in the nation, and 70 percent of our sewers are now over 70 years old with some as old as 150 years. City records show a backlog of 70 miles of sewers that are undersized and require replacement. The Channel Force Main, a very large pipeline that transports much of the City’s wastewater has been broken and repaired three times in the last 16 years. In addition, the current failure rates for our sewer pipes and infrastructure are expected to nearly double in the coming decades. Our master plan will identify specific improvement needs and their costs.
Nationwide, the water and wastewater treatment systems are aging. In order to keep our communities safe, healthy, and enjoyable, we need to have reliable and resilient infrastructure. To learn more about the value of water and wastewater infrastructure and a grassroots program, “Water is Life, and Infrastructure Makes it HappenTM”, please click on the logo below and visit Water Environment Fedaration’s (WEF) website.
